Creating Email Subscription Using FeedBurner
We have all heard the saying “the money is in the list” referring to building an email list, so you can keep in contact with your market. But for the new internet marketer, the cost of subscribing to an email autoresponder service can seem very expensive.
With the two major companies, Aweber and GetResponse, you are charged for the number of email subscribers on your list, and with their recent price changes, it has gone beyond the price “comfort zone” of many marketers. Spending $50 to $100 a month may not seem high to an established internet marketer, but when you’re starting out, every marketing penny counts.
If you are serious about making money online, you must create an email list, even while you are pinching your pennies. One great solution is to offer an email option from your blog. You can create a simple system for sending out your blog posts by email using Google’s Email Subscription via FeedBurner service. The FeedBurner service will allow you to start collecting and emailing subscribers for free.
To use the email subscription via FeedBurner, you will need to sign in to your Google account, and add your blog feed. You then add to your blog or web site, your readers fill out the form and subscribe to your blog feed. You can even add the subscription form as a widget in Typepad or Blogger. Your readers would then receive your new blog posts in email.
Here’s the step by step instructions in detail :
- go to www.Feedburner.com
- login using your Google account. if you don’t have it, create it first by clicking ‘Create an account’.
- once you’ve logged in, type your feed address. then click NEXT.
if you’re using Wordpress, usually your feed address is http://yourdomain.com/feed
but if you’re using Blogger, your feed address is http://yourblog.blogspot.com/atom.xml - on the next page, customize your Feed Title and Feed Address. then click NEXT to continue.
- click NEXT once again to get additional feature for free, FeedBurner Stats.
- click on check-box where you want to enable clickthroughs or other stats. then click NEXT to continue.
- to enable the email subscription feature, click Publicize tab then click ‘Email Subscriptions’ on left side and click ‘Activate’
- you should see this code after ‘Activate’ button clicked :
<a href="http://feedburner.google.com/fb/a/mailverify?uri=YourBlog&loc=en_US">Subscribe to Your Blog by Email</a>
you can directly use that code on your blog or if you want to use it with image or icon, just use the highlighted code given below :
<a href="http://feedburner.google.com/fb/a/mailverify?uri=YourBlog&loc=en_US">
<img border="0" src="http://link-to-your-image-file"></a> - you’re done! do some test before you publish it. you should see the Feedburner’s subscription page after clicking that link.
The FeedBurner service does come with a cost. The cost is in the features you lose. You can’t have a list of custom messages sent to new subscribers on a scheduled basis. Also, you will not have the detailed statistics you get from the paid autoresponders.
I suspect it is much easier to get listed on one of the email blacklists or caught in junk folders, since you don’t have the teams at Aweber or GetResponse working with Internet providers to keep you off of the spam lists. One other big issue, blog posts are not the greatest email format for email marketing, but keeping in contact with your market with FeedBurner emails, is much better than no emails.
Using the email subscription via FeedBurner is an inexpensive way to start collecting subscribers into your sales funnel. As your sales increase, you can move up to the more feature rich services from GetResponse or Aweber.
