One of the first places I want the word about my blog posts spread is on Digg. Digg gives a good boost to my traffic, and to the rankings of my blog post on the search engines. Digg is even more powerful if it is not only me “digg’ing it”, but if my readers submit a digg comment also. Most people do not even think about submitting a Digg about our blog posts, unless we ask them.

Just putting a comment on our blog requesting they Digg the article is usually not very effective. How often do you take the time to go open Digg, login, type up a comment, and submit it, just because someone asked? If we really want our readers to Digg the story, then we need to provide them with a fast, simple way to post their Digg, and right at the moment they finish reading our article. The best way to increase your readers Digg’ing your article is to provide them with a simple link to Digg that fills out most of the information for them.

The Wordpress Digg This Plugin can fill our needs for simplifying the Digg submission process for our readers. When they click the Digg It icon, it will take them directly to Digg’s site, letting them quickly Digg your post. The Digg this plugin will even show the Digg count for our blog post.

To install the Digg plugin only requires these few steps:

Logon to your Wordpress administration page.

Once you have logged on, go the “Plugins” tab on the left panel and click “Add New“.

On the search field, put “WP Digg This” and hit the “Search Plugins” button. Once the search result appears, hit “Install” link on the “WP Digg This” plugin.

On the plugin description Window, click “Install Now“.

Once the installation has complete, don’t forget to click “Activate Plugin“.

To add the Digg button to each of your post, createedit a post. On the New/Edit Post page, scroll to the bottom page and you should see the “Custom Field” section. Put “digg” on the “Name” field and “1” to the “Value” (without quotation mark) and click “Add Custom Field” button. Then, you could proceed with editing and publishing your post. The digg button should be showing on your blog post if your plugin is correctly installed.

Like many plugins, if you want to change the location of the button, you will need to tweak your theme code. In most cases the default location works great.

Digg is a very powerful method of promotion, and one you should not overlook. Installing the Digg This plugin will increase your number of Diggs, which increases your traffic. We all know, increased traffic results in more income, and I really Digg increased income.

Nothing beats having our readers help promote our content. If they really like what we’ve said, or produced, we want to make it very easy for them to share their excitement with the world. The problem is, many of your readers are not willing to spend the time and effort to login to the social bookmarking sites, then copy and paste URL’s. How many of your readers do you believe will open a new window, go to Digg, Technorati, Delicious, Propeller, and other sites? If we really want them to bookmark our sites, we need to simplify the process.

You can make it easier for your readers to social bookmark your content, by adding one of the social bookmarking buttons plugins. Adding social bookmarking buttons to your blog, allows the reader to click a single button, which launches the social bookmarking site, and fills out a portion of the entries for them. These plugins normally include over 50 of the best social bookmarking sites in their list, with the most popular ones displaying as the buttons in front. This makes it more likely our excited readers will bookmark our site, which gives us more traffic, and more rankings.

Here is the steps for you to install my favorite social bookmarking plugin:

Login to your Wordpress blog to access your Dashboard.

On left side, click tiny arrow on Plugins section then click ‘Add New’.

Type ‘Social Bookmarking Reloaded’ on search box, hit ‘Search Plugins’ button. Click ‘Install’.

Click ‘Install Now’ when description window appears.

Wordpress will do the installation for you, don’t forget to click ‘Activate Plugin’.

To customize this plugins, click ‘Social Bookmarking R’ on Settings section.

If your blog is in English, change the ‘Display Title’, ‘Add’ and ‘to’ string. Also, if you want this buttons appear on every single post you have, choose ‘when a single post is viewed’.

Click ‘Save’.

You can choose which social bookmarking sites you want right on the bottom side of the ‘Options’ section and don’t forget to click ‘Save’ button once you choose it.

While the social bookmarking buttons are a great addition to your marketing strategy, it is not a total solution. It is great for having your readers bookmark your posts, but does not allow you, the marketer, to automate your social bookmarking to a variety of key social sites. For you this would still be a tedious task. Just adding the button is usually not enough, you may need to ask your readers to bookmark your post if they find it helpful. You’ll find that not all of the social bookmarking sites carry the same benefit, Digg is more powerful today than Delicious. By having a wide range of options for your readers, they may not bookmark on your preferred bookmarking site.

The good news, by using the social bookmarking plugin, you will definitely increase the percentage of readers who will take the time to bookmark your posts. This will give you a great boost in traffic, and as we all know, added traffic can mean extra dollars in the bank.
